In 2001, then a staff photographer with The Miami Herald, I began a 15-month project documenting my grandparents’ transition from their lifelong home in White Plains, NY, to an assisted living facility in Miami. Indeed, as the world’s population lives longer, it’s a journey many of us will face. So after 4 ½ decades of birthdays and barbeques, reunions and retirement, my grandfather and grandmother, then 90 and 89, can’t quite care for 190 Beverly Rd. like they used to. Gus and Sally, together for 68 years, cope with the physical and emotional strain of their move to South Florida, where three grandchildren and one son await. And they embark on a new journey in apartment living, dining hours and bingo games – along with a few unexpected events that prove life indeed goes on. This first-person story appeared in consecutive Sunday editions of the Miami Herald and deeply resonated with the South Florida community.
